Seasccape 18 ‘Nikita’ GBR 132,  2010

The Seascape 18 is a fast one-design planing sport boat;  exciting but safe and easy to sail.  The rig is a 7/8 sloop with a square-topped main.  The hull is sandwich foam fibreglass polyester and as such is unsinkable.  The spars are all carbon fibre, including the bowsprit which launches and retracts simply with the spinnaker from a deck sock.

The Seascape 18 was a radical new design from Slovenia launched in 2008 and continued to be sold under this name until 2018, being awarded ‘European Yacht of the Year’ in 2010.  More recently the identical one-design specification has been re-branded as the Beneteau First 18 SE.  It is widely raced and cruised across Europe and the UK.

The Seascape readily planes at over 10 knots, driven downwind by its large asymmetric spinnaker and is as nimble as a dinghy.  The jib is quickly deployed on a furler.  Despite its racing credentials and mini-Transat long-distance heritage, the Seascape will double as a fun family weekend camping/ cruiser, sometimes with a tent over the cockpit.  Stability offshore in a strong breeze comes from the very wide beam and heavily ballasted lifting keel.

Below deck there are two full length berths.  With the fully lifting keel and two liftable transom-hung rudders, shallow waters are easily navigable and indeed the boat can be brought up on to the beach.  There is a huge cockpit accommodating up to four crew although it is normally raced with two or three and can even be single-handed.

It is easy to trail, rig  and launch, has low running costs and is easy to maintain.

This boat, ‘Nikita’ has been successfully raced at Dartmouth Regattas and won the French GPEN Open Championship in 2019.  It has also been a great boat to train aspiring teenagers moving up from dinghies on inland waters to offshore racing.

The boat comes with a roller trailer that recently had a new modern aluminium axle and suspension fitted, that has not been in sea water – she is easily hoisted in and out from either the eye on the centreboard casing or in slings.

‘Nikita’ is fully equipped to the one-design racing specification.  Extras include a 2 hp 2-stroke outboard, jib forestay cover, rudder bag, mast cover for towing, Windex, anchor, warps, fenders bucket and paddle to class requirements.

‘Nikita’ has two full sets of sails: a fairly well-used ‘training’ set and the racing set used for only regattas.
